Itinerary
OVERVIEW
Program Time: Daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Waimea Valley is a 1,800-acre property on the North Shore of Oʻahu. OHA acquired this property as a way of preserving the land for its cultural value, to protect traditional and customary rights, and to perpetuate the Native Hawaiian people and culture. OHA has since transferred title to the property to Hi‘ipaka LLC, which now manages all activities in Waimea Valley.
Waimea means reddish fresh water, ancient Hawaiians believed that Waimea had healing properties and they would bring their wounded soldiers to the waterfall and lay them in water for healing. The word for wealth or value in Hawaiian is waiwai (water-water), because of its necessity for sustaining life. In the past, Hawaiians never defiled a freshwater source. All bathing and washing were done closer to the ocean, near the end of the stream or river.
This large parkland offers a botanical garden, a waterfall area & info on Native Hawaiian history. Waimea Valley’s botanical garden includes 52 themed gardens and is home to over 5000 documented types of tropical and subtropical plants including native Hawaiian plants and globally endangered species. Botanical tours are every day at 12:30 pm.
Besides the richness of plant species, Waimea Valley also has a waterfall created from the heavy rains of the Ko'olau Mountains. The name of this Hawaiian waterfall changes depending on the amount of water that is flowing. When the water flows gently, the name is Waihe’e, meaning softly dripping water. After heavy rains, when more water is flowing, its name is Waihi, which means purging water.
Have a refreshing swim in the pool under these scenic falls in north Oahu. You can get there via an easy 1.5-mile hike through a beautifully landscaped path along the Waimea River. While the park is beautiful year-round, you may encounter a dry waterfall during periods with little rainfall. Tickets are required to enter the Waimea Waterfall and include the rental of a life jacket, which you must wear to take a dip in the pool. Beware of the slippery rocks. If you need refreshment—and to complete the experience—have a quintessential shave ice on your way back.
